What is a ratings point, or "GRP?" |
A rating expresses audience viewing amounts. You may also hear the term "rating" referred to as a rating point or GRP (gross rating point) . One rating point represents one percent of the total television households in the region (as determined annually by Nielsen Media Research.)
In the MIami Fort Lauderdale market (17th in the nation)
one rating point in our designated market area (DMA) represents approximately 14,868 homes. The total number of television households in MIami is 1,486,860 x .01 (one percent) = 14868 homes.
If you choose to advertise your product in a program which achieves a 5 rating, a commercial that runs within that program would reach 74,325 television homes.
In the West Palm Beach Market (38th in the nation)
one rating point represents approximately 7006 homes. The total number of television households in West Palm Beach is 700,650 x .01 (one percent) = 7006 homes.
If you choose to advertise your product in a program which achieves a 5 rating, a commercial that runs within that program would reach 35,030 television homes.
And one point to keep in mind; most television homes contain more the one viewer, to the number of people you actually reach could be considerably higher.

When you discuss the frequency of an add message, what does that mean? |
Advertisers can request that a we provide information on how often the average viewer will see and hear their commercial. This is expressed as frequency. | |
I've heard people taking about ratings, and then, mention Demographics. What are they, and why are they important? |
There's more to Advertise With Us effectiveness than simply the number of people watching a program. If you sell widgets, it makes sense to place your ads in programs where widget buyers are likely to buy.

For Advertise With Us purposes, Nielsen Media Research monitors television viewing and reports the results on different audience demographics such as: TV households, Adults 25-54 years old, Men 18-34 years old, adults 18 years old+, etc. |
